Virtual
Trading goes blind! The annual
virtual trading competition in association with Cornwall
Education Business Partnership and Worldwide Financial
Planning goes blind on the 19th February. Launceston A is
currently sitting middle table with a modest profit whilst
Launceston B are struggling to regain some of their early
losses. The final is on 19th March 2010 at the Sands
Resort, Porth Newquay. Good luck and keep
trading!

Academic
Tutoring. Work for BTEC
First and Economics students is on the VLE at
http://vle.launceston-college.cornwall.sch.uk for Friday
22nd January.
Sea Food and Eat It! Year 10 students
from Hospitality, Travel & Tourism and Catering we
treated to a full tour of the Seafood Restaurant and
Cookery School in Padstow. Students were involved in
finding out more about the careers available within the
hospitality and tourism industries both nationally and
locally.

Gone Fishing. Year 12 trip to
Plymouth National Aquarium. Students from Yr12 BTEC
Business class visited Plymouth National Aquarium to
research how recruitment and selection was carried out.
Students spent the day at the centre analysing the use of
recruitment and selection documents to aid their Unit 4
assignment.
November 2009
Splash!
On
the 19th November A2 Business students will be competing
against other local Sixth Forms and Colleges in the Splash
Enterprise Challenge run by Plymouth University Business
School. A group of six students will be forming a
competitive team to face the challenge set on the day. Good
luck!
School
Bank. Year 12’s have
begun the School Bank supported by Natwest. After an
introductory session, the students have begun promoting the
banking facilities available to the lower school.
October 2009
BTEC’s
visit Exeter.
Students from
the BTEC National class are set for their first trip out to
aid their assignment in Unit 1 - Exploring Business and
Unit 3 - Marketing. Students will be set challenges to
research and analyse two businesses as evidence for their
assignment.

Virtual
Share Trading Challenge, Truro. Year 12 students
get set for a thrilling battle between themselves and other
Schools across Cornwall in a 'bid' to become Share Trading
Challenge winners. This year is Launceston College's second
year in the challenge but looking at the impressive team
selection, it looks like it going to be a close one! Good
luck to both Launceston Economics and Launceston Business
teams.

EBEA
- Economics National Conference. Year 12
Economics students and Year 13 Business students will be
visiting Oxford Brookes University on the 19th June for the
EBEA National Economics Conference. Students will be
attending a lecture on the current state of the UK economy
before participating the pit challenge trading game.

Innovation Event. After coming an
impressive third for their trade stand display at Kingsley
Village, Fraddon, the Year 12 team presented their product
at the Young Enterprise Innovation Event at Truro College.

Year
10 Mocks. Year 10 students
sit their mock exam for Business on Tuesday 21st April. The
actual Unit 1 exam is on Thursday 21st May.
Getting
Active. Year 10 students
get their initial briefing for their 'Getting Active' week
with Cornwall Education Business Partnership in June. The
day consists of 5 days which focus on employability skills
to aid the development of students to further their career
prospects.
Virtual
Share Trading. Year 12 and 13
teams visit the Sands Resort, Newquay to find out their
destiny in the virtual share trading challenge on Thursday
23rd April.

Easter
Revision.
The
GCSE Easter revision day for Business will take place on
Thursday 7th April focusing on coursework improvement and
exam revision.
Make a Pasty (Part 2).
The
second half of Year 10 are about the embark on their days
with Ginsters, making their own design of pasty. The day
forms the second half of the years experience of Learning
to Learn.
February 2009
Make
Your Mark with a Tenner.
Year
11 Business students have begun their own entrepreneurial
activities with the financial assistance of Make Your Mark.
Students have been loaned £10 each by the organisation to
trade during February with the aim to make as much profit
as possible along with having the greatest social impact.
Student ideas have included - smoothie production,
hospitality events, raffles and even an oven cleaning
service. The project runs throughout February before the
students return their initial investment and are judged on
their successes.
Stocks
Away! Launceston
College teams are looking good in the race for stock
champions. Both Year 12 and 13 have been dominating the
virtual share challenge run by Worldwide Financial Planning
with the Year 12's pushing into the lead going into
February. The competition ends on the 21st April

Launches Near. Year 13's begin
designing their websites for Pat's Greeting Cards and
Madhatters Tea Room in preparation for a presentation to
both businesses in November.

Young
Enterprise Launch. Year 12
students have been invited to the inaugural Young
Enterprise 2008 launch. The event takes place on Wednesday
24th September in BS3.
Learning
to Learn Days. The new year
starts off with a difference this year at Launceston
College with the introduction of 4 Learning to Learn Days
within each area of the College. Students are now familiar
with the Launceston Language for Learning which includes
the following learning competencies: Self Managing
Learners, Independent Enquiring Learners, Creative
Learners, Resilient Learners, Team Learners and Reflective
Learners. Students in Business can look forward to the
following activities.....
Thursday
4th September - Year 9 Personal
Development Day in association with the Army.
Friday
5th September - Year 11 Option
Group will be participating in a number of enterprise
activities throughout the whole day.
Monday
8th September - Year 10 Option
Group will be out in Perranporth undertaking a Retail
Business Opportunity activity. The full day will be spent
wthin Perranporth analysing the local environment before
making decisions about the possibility of launching a new
retail business within the area.

Results!
Congratulations
to all students who received their results over the past
few weeks - some excellent results well done! To name but a
few, well done to... Rob Bell (A - A Level Business), Dan
Daw (A - A Level Business), Kristina Locke (A- GCSE
Business). GCSE overall achieved an excellent results with
67% of you achieving between a A*-C. Best of luck to you
all with continued education or employment.

High
School Musical. Students from Year 11 have
produced the superb High School Musical programme. The
programme forms part of Task 1 of their Business and
Communication unit on the Edexcel Pilot GCSE course.
Congratulations particularly to Chris Coles who produced
the winning design. Performances are from Tuesday 15th July
to Saturday 19th July.

Design. Launceston
Chamber of Commerce is running a training session on
website design at Launceston College on Wednesday 24th
April. The Business Department would like to an extended
service by offering a chance to have your website designed
by Year 13 A2 students. With a couple of businesses having
already taken this offer up, we are keen to have more. If
you are interested or want to discuss this further please
contact Mr Brittain at the College or via
email.
Easter Revision School. Easter revision
for GCSE Business is on Thursday 1st April with two
sessions being run by Mr Brittain in BS1 (am and pm). All
Year 10 and Year 11 students are welcome to attend to
either revise for the onscreen test or catch up on
coursework.

students got a superb presentation and demonstration from

Top
of the Class! Two A2 Business
students stormed into the top 10% in the country by
achieving maximum marks in BUS4. Rob Bell and Dan Daw
scored a max 90 points in their recent exams which puts
them in the top 10% of Business students in the UK.

9 Options. Year 9 Students
have been a taster of life in Business over the past two
weeks. Mr Brittain has been visiting Year 9 ICT lessons and
playing the Lobster Game enterprise simulation. Students
have been keen to know more about their options in Business
and this provided a perfect opportunity for them to find

Form Options. Business has a
range of 4 options available for students in sixth form -
Economics, Business Studies, Applied Business and BTEC

Revision, Revision, Revision. All students are
preparing for exams in January. Additional exam revision
support sessions will be available on the following dates:
Monday 7th & Tuesday 8th January - AS Applied Unit 3.
Year 10 Enterprise Days. Year 10 students
prepare to commence their 3 day enterprise projects from
29th-31st January 2008. Theme for this year is 'expansion
at Tesco Launceston'. Teams of business consultants have
been employed to analyse the proposed expansion plans.
Their job is to design floorplans and recommend new product

Marketing
Presentations (20th December). AS Applied
students are preparing for their marketing presentations in
a action packed day on Thursday 20th December. Students
will be presenting their marketing proposals for their
company of choice to a panel of judges including students
from Year 9 and members of the College Leadership Team.

Department undergoes its first Teaching and Learning Review
from students on 12th December 2007. Students are invited
to share their thoughts and ideas on Business teaching and

Enterprise
Winners Again! Year 10 students
went down a storm at the Young Enterprise Event in Bodmin.
After undertaking a mornign packed with challenges,
students delivered their business idea to the judges along
with teams from Wadebridge and Camelford Schools. The
Launceston College students came up trumps with a stunning
presentation that wowed the judges. Well done Year 10's!

in Business! Year 11 Business
Girls have been invited to attend the Women in Business
Conference at the Sands Resort Newquay in conjunction with
Wadebridge and Camelford Schools. The girls will be treated
by guest speakers from leading business women before
putting their skills into practice as they compete for the
'Business Challenge'.

Go Sheepish at Organic Wool! Year 13 A2
students visited two unique Cornish businesses - Natural
Fibre Company and Cornish Organic Wool. The group meet the
MD's of both companies and gave them a thorough questioning
session to assist their business planning and strategy

A
new start...
September sees some new faces in the Business Department
with Mr Brittain, Subject Leader for Business and Mr
Greaves, Business Teacher beginning their first term at
Launceston College. Mr Hillier remains a part of the
Business Team in a part time capacity seeing our Year 13's
through to the end, whilst Mr Sproats has left Launceston
for pastures new.
